The Beginning of a New Journey - Dr. S.I. Eludiora (Part 1 advisor)
You should be happy that you are a winner (we rise up for the Champions) - You crossed the JAMB/UTME and post-UTME races. Congratulations!
But no celebration yet. Look up! There are tasks ahead. God will ease your tasks and you will all succeed in life.
Two types of Freshers:
1. Part One Freshers
2. Part Two Freshers
All freshers must Prepare for the white house journey. The white house is meant to reshape you academically, morally, and consciously and painstakingly in doing your assignments and readings.
Some of you got 8 or 9 As in WAEC or NECO. Leave that at the OAU main gate. You have to plan your new journey. What you need to do is to be punctual in your classes. Listen to your lecturers. Hate no one. Don't have friends but few good friends.
Your book is number.
You must be a good time manager.
You must have a reading timetable and culture.
You must keep your lecture notes up to date.
Don't go to bed unless you read what you are taught for the day.
Tutorials, practicals/labs, quizzes, and attendance, please take them with utmost seriousness. Mid-semester tests and exams are important and must not be missed.
Watch your GPA and CGPA, and see your part advisers when things are going wrong or tough and well or smooth. Seek advice regularly. Don't keep things to yourself.
Department of Computer Science and Engineering has single and double honours. Computer Science has two-degree options: B.Sc Computer Science with Mathematics and B.Sc Computer Science with Economics.
B.Sc. Computer Engineering is a single honour. Apart from the Faculty of Science, Computer Engineering students will do courses in all Departments in the Faculty of Technology except FST. We have nine departments in our Faculty.
Computer engineering graduates can register as computer engineers (through COREN). Computer Engineering students are qualified to do other professional Certifications in computer-related areas.
The department runs PGD, Executive Master in Information Technology, BSc, MSc, MPhil, and PhD.
The department has five program options at the post-graduate level, namely:
1. Intelligent Systems Engineering,
2. Computer Engineering,
3. Software engineering
4. Computer Science
5. Information Systems
For your information, the department has gotten the University's approval to become FACULTY OF COMPUTING SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING.
It is expected that more departments will be formed or created.
The department has research groups. Computing Intelligent System Research Group (CISRG) Coordinated by Dr O. A. Odejobi, Prof of Computing. Each of the program options has at least one research group.
The department has about forty staff members, teaching and non-teaching.
The department has computer labs for Undergraduate and post-graduate students.
The department has over one thousand students per session. Accommodation or hostel facilities are managed by the University. In OAU, the department doesn't provide accommodation for the students (Undergraduate and post-graduate). It is done Centrally.
The university has health facilities. You have to register to benefit. There is the NHIS for staff and students. You can participate in Sports activities. Football, handball, basketball, etc. The drama department is always ready to entertain you. Occasionally, the student Union does bring musicians. The Music department is fully active.
Surely, you will enjoy OAU ILE-IFE.
OAU ILE-IFE is for learning and Culture.
You are at liberty to practice your religion.
Advise:
Do the following daily:
Remember God,
Pray for yourself and your parents,
Eat well and nutritious food,
Do exercise, Sleep well,
READ DAILY.
The Department is your immediate family.
